Chelsea Refai has an eye for modern art. One evening on the search to buy 20th century art, Refai found herself on a well known auction site and came across various modern painted designs for sale.
After enquiring on the designs, the seller replied stating they had 210 designs by the artist Sheila Bownas, a contemporary of Robin and Lucien Day. The designs were for fabrics and wallpaper.
Refai was instantly attracted to the designs of Bownas via the auction site, and with further communication, the seller offered to send Refai the complete collection for her to make a selection!
Upon receipt of the large collection, Refai was quite possibly unaware in the adventure ahead; suitably impressed, she offered to buy the complete collection.
The acquisition was finalised with the complete collection in possession, however, research of the artist had ended in nothing other than an obituary. Refai knew there was more to Sheila Bownas and traced the family through the auction house were the pieces were originally sold.
Finding a gallery space she held an exhibition of the complete work and received an outpour of interest.
The rest is history, Refai rescued the collection, and over 6 years has since put some of the designs into production. With prints, furniture, fabric and more available on the website SheilaBownas.com
